NGIoT Thematic Workshop: Energy

May 18, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

NGIoT Thematic workshop series on IoT and Edge Computing

This workshop on Energy is part of a thematic workshop series on IoT and Edge computing, organised by the NGIoT and EU-IoT Coordination and Support Actions in collaboration with the European Commission and relevant associations, networks, and projects.

In spring 2021, NGIoT workshops are dedicated to IoT and Edge computing in 6 key application domains: Smart Cities & Communities; Agrifood and rural communities (30 March); manufacturing (27 April); energy and health (18 May).

IoT and Edge computing: Energy

The Internet of Things is growing at breakneck speed. Reports suggest that the global market for IoT will surpass $1.38 trillion by 2026 — a substantial increase from its 2020 valuation of $761.4 billion.
As more devices – whether smart meters, thermostats, electric vehicles, home appliances, HVAC and distributed energy resources- are connected to the grid, the challenge of communication between the grid and these distributed devices is becoming highly demanding. Utilities benefit from gathering information from these distributed resources in the context of efficient integration of renewables, i.e. for flexibility management and managing demand and response.
Higher efficiency and operational stability can be achieved by moving decisions to grid edge. The grid edge will allow to keep data local, leveraging data from distributed devices with low latency and ensure stability on a local level. With advances in digital technologies like AI, edge computing, 5G etc, IoT devices become increasingly intelligent allowing grid devices to analyse, and make independent decisions and to collaborate with neighbouring devices to address ad hoc grid challenges (e.g. with fluctuating renewable energy sources or EV Charging). Smart edge devices, such as next generation smart meters or a wallbox for EV charging, require to provide a communication interface to various cross-sector standards and systems to allow an active grid management. It is the core and crystallization of smart and distributed intelligence at the edge for increasing the reliability of the grid networks.
The workshop will address new concepts for the grid edge, including communication interfaces, interoperability, data exchange, resource virtualization and distributed intelligence at the grid edge to allow optimization of distributed energy resources and more efficient renewable integration.
