NGIoT Thematic workshop series on IoT and Edge Computing

This workshop on Health and Care is part of a thematic workshop series on IoT and Edge computing, organised by NGIoT, the EU IoT roadmap Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action in collaboration with the European Commission, DG Connect and relevant associations, networks, and projects.

In spring 2021, NGIoT workshops are dedicated to IoT and Edge computing in 6 key application domains: Smart Cities & Communities and Smart Homes; Agrifood and rural communities (30 March); manufacturing ( 27 April); energy and health (18 May) and automotive industry and mobility (15 June)

IoT and Edge computing: Health & Care

Advances in IoT and edge computing have led to new opportunities and challenges in delivering health and care services to citizens in Europe. There is an increased effort to leverage edge devices and data analytics to transform reactive care to proactive and preventive care, clinic-centric practice to patient- and living-centered practice, centralised training paradigms to embedded interventions along the computing continuum, and episodic response to continuous well-being monitoring and maintenance.

The smart healthcare market size was valued at US$ 143.5 billion in 2019 and expected to reach around US$ 528 billion by 2027 with a CAGR of 16.4% from 2020 to 2027. At the EU level, smart health solutions are considered to have a tremendous market potential, especially given the fact that EU-wide expenditure on medical care and cure is estimated to amount to approximately 10% of gross domestic product. The drivers that spur Smart Health innovation include continuous developments in ICT, e-location technology, and broadband data connectivity.

In line with the recent developments on smart health, the workshop will address this topic in the light of IoT and Edge Computing. The first part of the workshop ‘Strategic Agendas and Positions’ will address new concepts in smart health and care, in the context of the increasing importance of the convergence between IoT and Edge computing, followed by presentations of concrete use cases. The second part of the workshop “Visions and statements” will consist of a series of pitches from the audience, and invites to open discussions. Finally, the workshop will close with a reflection on the upcoming Horizon Europe and Digital Europe programmes.
